SALISBURY COMBINED MUSICAL SOCIETY
A FESTIVAL OF MUSIC
History
Music in Salisbury came into existence in 1967 with the purpose of promoting musical events in the city and to maintain a diary of future musical events to which those contemplating staging a musical event could consult to avoid clashing with a similar musical event on or near the same date.
Both these aims remain the same today but with a hugely increased level of activity due to increase in musical organisations which have developed over the past thirty years.
In 1967 there were some 10 members but today this has increased to around 45 and includes all different promoters including the Salisbury Festival, choral and orchestral groups, both large and small, and the major venues in which concerts are staged including The Cathedral and the City Hall. The day to day running of the organisation is in the hands of a small executive committee (all volunteers) and there is an annual meeting for all members.
Besides maintaining the Music In Salisbury Diary, which all music promoters are encouraged to consult before going firm on a concert date, Music in Salisbury promotes and publishes an annual Booklet in which details of forthcoming musical events are published which is available free to everyone at all the major outlets in the city, displays monthly Music in Salisbury posters around the city and maintains a website of all musical events.
