The History of Salisbury Combined Music Society

Music in Salisbury, which is a voluntary organisation, came into existence in 1968 with the purpose of promoting musical events in the City and to maintain a Diary to avoid clashes of similar musical events on or near the same date. Both these aims remain the same today.

In 1968 there were some 10 member organisations but today this has increased to around 45 members. Member organisations (a list of which can be found on this website) include both local professional organisations such as the Salisbury International Arts Festival and Sarum Orchestra and amateur organisations, choral and orchestral, as well as the representatives of local venues in which musical events are held including Salisbury Cathedral, the City Hall and churches. The day-to-day running of the organisation is the responsibility of a small Executive Committee which meets twice yearly with an Annual meeting for all members.

Besides maintaining this website and the Music In Salisbury events Diary, which all Promoters are encouraged to consult before going firm on a date, Music in Salisbury promotes and publishes an annual Booklet in which details of all known forthcoming musical events are listed which is available free to everyone at all the major public outlets in the City. It is planned to dispense with the Booklet in due course and for this website to be the sole means of promoting musical events in Salisbury.
